THE STATE OF THE SILVER HALIDE PAPER SUPPLY CHAIN IN 2026
For decades, silver halide paper has set the standard for high-quality photographs. Known for the rich colors and tonal depth they produce, silver halide prints have been used for everything from school portraits to landscape photos and professional artwork. However, the supply chain behind silver halide photo paper has come under increasing pressure in recent years, and photo labs are especially feeling the impact.
As global silver demand continues to climb due to its many uses in electronics, medical manufacturing, and green energy like solar panels and electric vehicles, photo labs that use silver halide paper are left to compete for resources with some of the largest, most influential players in the economy. In 2015, silver cost $15.70 per ounce; in 2025, that number reached over $72.40 per ounce. While supply is increasing to unprecedented levels in response, the increase in demand continues to outstrip the mining industry’s production capabilities.
Compounding the issue is the limited number of suppliers currently producing silver halide paper. As of 2026, only Kodak and Fujifilm are producing materials for silver halide prints, which means photo labs have few options to combat rising material costs and extensive lead times. Missed shipments, back orders, and allocation limits have become common, leaving many labs scrambling to meet customer deadlines.
These constraints create a ripple effect across operations both upstream and downstream. Chaotic production schedules cause frustration and stress for photo labs, while customers become progressively less satisfied with the service they receive. High-volume segments like school photography, which typically encounter tight deadlines and seasonal demand, are especially vulnerable to these types of disruptions. In this environment, relying solely on silver halide prints has evolved from a simple material cost issue into an existential threat for photo labs across the globe.
A SMARTER ALTERNATIVE TO SILVER HALIDE PHOTO PAPER
When confronted with these seemingly unbeatable odds, what can the average photo lab do to preserve their margins, maintain customer satisfaction, and continue creating high-quality photographs? For many labs, the solution has been to move away from silver halide paper entirely in favor of a digital solution called silver halide replacement, or SHR™.
SHR replicates the look and feel of traditional silver halide prints using a combination of digital printing and thermal lamination, eliminating the need for silver halide photo paper altogether. Instead of relying on a constrained supply chain, SHR enables photo labs to use standard paper paired with specialty laminates, such as PlatinumSHR™ from Nobelus. (To learn more about how to make premium photo paper using SHR, read our blog post on the topic.)
This shift gives photo labs access to a broader, more flexible supply chain with multiple sourcing options. As a result, labs can significantly reduce material costs while avoiding the increasing volatility that exists within today’s silver markets. In dealing with photo labs in the field, solutions experts at Nobelus have found as much as a 38% decrease in material costs directly due to shifting the lab’s workflow to SHR.
